It’s Errol Flynn’s birthday today and guess what he’s getting for it: a brand new independent cinema. Isn’t that what everyone wants for their 104th birthday?
Errol Flynn won’t really be getting any presents because he died in 1959, but nevertheless the Errol Flynn Filmhouse opens today [June 20th] in Northampton, the place where the Hollywood legend spent his early career. Flynn graced the stage with the Northampton Repertory Company at the Royal Theatre, the original site of which is adjacent to the new 90-seat cinema.
The Errol Flynn Filmhouse, managed by Royal & Derngate, will be offering the best in world, independent, British and mainstream film alongside some very lovely locally produced cosmestibles.
Royal & Derngate Chief Executive Martin Sutherland said: “We thought long and hard about how to name our brand new cinema, but we kept coming back to the one, genuine A-list connection that Northampton and our theatres have to Hollywood and the movies, which is Errol Flynn..”
The first month’s film programme includes the Liberace biopic Behind The Candelabra , pre-war period drama Summer In February , Joss Whedon’s beautiful black and white version of Much Ado About Nothing , chic and cheerful French romcom Populaire , Shane Meadow’s documentary The Stone Roses: Made Of Stone , NT Encore screenings of The Audience and the digital re-release of the classic Cleopatra .
