Medieval Kirkstall Abbey in Leeds is to host a Gothic Film Festival between 31st October and 3rd November, featuring a great range of timeless horror and cult films…
It wouldn’t be a Gothic festival without Murnau’s Nosferatu, which will grace the opening night with live accompaniment by musicians Gunter Buchwald, Jeff Davenport and composer/presenter of BBC4’s recent Sound of Cinema series, Neil Brand. The film will be projected within the walls of the Abbey, providing the perfect atmosphere and acoustics for such a screening.
Other films to screen at this unique film festival venue include Hammer classic The Devil Rides Out, Witchfinder General, Bride of Frankenstein and, another silent gem with piano accompaniment, The Passion of Joan of Arc. And the organisers are, very thoughtfully we might add, also putting on a Junior Gothic event for those parents wanting to introduce their spawn to Nosferatu and the joys of Gothic cinema.
As the festival’s tagline advises you – prepare for darkness – and maybe some gleeful squealing.
Gothic Film Festival tickets are on sale now at the Carriageworks 0113 224 3801 and 31 st October – 3 rd November Kirkstall Abbey, door sales only.
The 4-day Gothic Film Festival is presented by the Cambridge Film Trust and Broadway Nottingham, in association with the National Media Museum Bradford and Showroom Sheffield with support from BFI Film Forever.
