Brian Yuzna’s 1980s horror satire, Society, is screening as part of a one-off Cine-Excess event in Brighton on 23rd May. The formerly London-based festival and academic symposium has upped sticks to the south coast and is now associated with University of Brighton. Bringing cult icons to UK shores is part of their raison d’être with Ruggero Deodato, Sergio Martino, Franco Nero and Enzo G. Castellari all having pitched up to take part in seminars and career talks.
Society will screen in a new HD cut at Duke’s at Komedia on Thursday 23rd May with Brian Yuzna himself appearing for a Q&A session after the film. Cine-Excess figurehead, Dr. Xavier Mendik, will be hosting the post-screening chat with the film-maker.
Yuzna’s career in horror is not restricted solely to Society; he produced such body horror gems as Re-Animator and From Beyond and directed the very good Return of the Living Dead Part III as well as the titles Re-Animator 2, The Dentist and Faust: Love of the Damned. His 1989 shocker, not released until 1992 in the US, remains his best and most intriguing work.
With incredible special effects courtesy of Screaming Mad George, along with an ending that needs to be seen to be believed (take a gander at the image up top for a glimpse of its nightmarish vision of ‘shunting’), Society is a cult classic waiting to be discovered by a new generation of film enthusiasts. This event gets the New Empress seal of approval.
