Ever wonder what Dana Carvey got up to in the 80s before Saturday Night Live made him a household name? No? Well I’ll tell you anyway. Besides appearing in Halloween II, This is Spinal Tap and Racing with the Moon, Carvey starred in a pretty much forgotten comedy flick starring Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster and Eli Wallach. Tough Guys (1986) sees Burt and Kirk play Harry Doyle and Archie Long respectively, the last men in America to ever rob a train. They went to prison for 30 years but their term is up now and they’re back on the streets.
Unfortunately for Harry and Archie, things have changed just a smidge since 1956. Modern-day criminals are weak and without any sense of dignity, obnoxious kids make you serve them all manner of frozen yoghurt and anyone over the age of 50 is pretty much seen as societal dead weight. Can Harry and Archie survive life circa 1986 on the straight or will they be tempted into one last job for old time’s sake? If you’ve always wanted to see Kirk Douglas dance around to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, this is definitely the film for you. If you haven’t, there’s also a hot broad in a cool blue wig. If that’s of interest.
